Open-top driving is increasingly rare in the U.K., with the number of new convertible models dropping nearly 50% since 2000, reaching a 20-year low after peaking in 2005.

According to the latest Convertibles Report by CarGurus, consumers now have only 16 new convertible options from the top 30 manufacturers—down 48% from 31 models in 2000. The most significant decline occurred in the last five years, with a 45% drop from 29 options in 2020. Just 10 manufacturers are expected to offer convertibles by 2025, compared to 15 in 2000 and 23 in 2005. Currently, 68% of popular car makers do not include convertibles in their lineups.

Brands still offering convertibles include BMW, Fiat, Ford, Jeep, Mazda, MG, Mini, Mercedes, Porsche, and Volkswagen. Notably, Audi has ceased production of convertibles, including the R8 Spyder, which was on sale for 16 years. The Mazda MX-5 is the longest-standing affordable convertible in the U.K., available since 1990.

Chris Knapman, CarGurus U.K. Editorial Director, stated that the decline in convertibles reflects a broader shift toward SUVs, which have seen a dramatic increase in offerings.

Despite the drop in new models, quality options remain, from the electric Fiat 500e C to the traditional Porsche 911 Cabriolet. The used car market continues to provide many convertible choices, with models like the Mazda MX-5 starting under £5,000.
