With the standard price of electricity increasing on 1 October, Ohme is advising electric vehicle (EV) drivers to switch to a smart tariff, potentially lowering their running costs to as little as £10 per month.
Starting from October 1, the new Standard Variable Tariff for electricity will rise to 26.35p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), meaning the average EV driver in the UK could spend over £440 a year to charge their vehicle.
Although this still costs less than half of running a petrol car, Ohme—the UK’s largest home EV charging company—wants to emphasise that charging expenses can be considerably lower with the various off-peak and smart energy tariffs available. For example, EV-friendly tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go offer rates as low as 7p per kWh, enabling a typical EV owner to charge their vehicle for under £10 a month.
“Any EV driver charging at home should consider switching to one of the many smart electricity tariffs available to help reduce their everyday running costs,” stated Ohme CEO David Watson. “Charging at home remains the most affordable option for EV drivers, even with this latest price increase, and switching to a smart tariff will help maximize those savings.”
For example, fully charging an Audi A6 Avant e-tron with a 75.8 kWh battery from 0% using an Ohme smart charger on a dynamic tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go might cost just £5.31, offering a claimed range of 361 miles according to WLTP standards. In contrast, the same charge under the new Standard Variable Tariff rate from October 1 will cost £19.97—more than three times as much.
Ohme acts as the official charger provider for several leading automotive brands, including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars, and the Volkswagen Group across the UK and Ireland. It is also the exclusive official charger provider for customers on the Motability scheme, the largest fleet operator in the UK, as well as for brands such as Hyundai, Smart, Suzuki, and XPENG in the UK.
