KGM Motors UK launches its Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain in the new Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid. The series-parallel hybrid system delivers a near-electric driving experience while preserving the range, durability, and towing capability expected of a KGM SUV.

Developed with BYD, the Dual Tech Hybrid System combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an e-DHT hybrid transmission and dual motors, delivering strong performance and efficiency across varied driving conditions.

The new petrol engine employs Miller-cycle operation to improve thermal efficiency and a variable-geometry turbocharger to deliver responsive performance across the rev range. Fuel injection pressure has been increased from 250 bar to 350 bar, improving combustion efficiency and providing more power while lowering emissions. Advanced cylinder-block coatings have also been applied to boost durability, helping the engine cope with the frequent start-stop cycles and changing loads typical of hybrid driving.

The engine delivers 149.6PS and 220Nm, often operating as a generator to supply energy to the motors and battery.

The system uses Korea’s first P1 + P3 dual-motor architecture, adapted from BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology. A 130kW P3 drive motor mounted near the drive shaft delivers 177PS and 300Nm, providing instant response and strong acceleration.

The e-DHT transmission supports electric-only, series hybrid, and parallel hybrid modes, adapting to speed and load. The dual motors can simultaneously charge and drive, optimizing energy recovery and deployment.

The system automatically switches between nine operating modes to deliver smooth, quiet performance. The vehicle selects the most efficient configuration for conditions, from city traffic to motorway cruising.

An energy flow diagram in the instrument cluster shows real-time operating mode, energy flow between components, and regeneration activity.

All-electric driving is possible up to 62mph with instant torque and near-silent operation. At higher speeds, the motor and engine combine for robust acceleration and efficient cruising.

The powertrain features adjustable regenerative braking with three levels of deceleration. Smart Regenerative Braking automatically adapts deceleration based on the distance to the vehicle ahead, maximizing energy recovery in stop-start traffic.

Both models feature extensive sound insulation to maintain a quiet cabin, plus smart frequency dampers on the shock absorbers for improved body control and comfort.

Kevin Griffin, Managing Director of KGM Motors UK, said: “The Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain gives customers the smooth, near-silent feel of electric vehicles with the range and usability they expect from a KGM. This technology is the foundation for our next generation of electrified powertrains.”

Both models connect to KGM’s 70-plus-year Korean heritage while offering extensive driver assistance and safety systems. The Actyon Hybrid adds a 360-degree camera, premium suede interior, noise-cancelling tyres, hexagon steering wheel and kick-operation power tailgate.
