The Renault 5 E-Tech electric has clinched the prestigious title of UK Car of the Year 2026, following its earlier win in the ‘Small Car of the Year’ category. The accolade, decided by a panel of over 30 leading British automotive journalists, highlights the Renault 5’s standout qualities in a fiercely competitive market.
Judges praised the Renault 5 E-Tech for its distinctive retro-inspired design, accessible pricing, and engaging driving experience—attributes that have resonated with both private buyers and fleet operators. John Challen, co-chairman of the UK Car of the Year Awards, noted, “With its retro styling, the new Renault 5 tugs at the heartstrings of those drivers who experienced the original. By adding an immensely fun and entertaining drive, desirability and affordability, the French favourite pulled off a resounding victory.”
Renault UK Managing Director Adam Wood expressed pride in the model’s reception: “With so many experienced automotive journalists voting for R5 as the UK Car of the Year, the award is something we’re very proud of. It has really hit the spot with retail and fleet customers.”
The Renault 5 E-Tech electric stands out not only for its nostalgic appeal but also for its modern practicality, featuring the OpenR Link infotainment system with Google built in, a chassis tuned for both agility and comfort, and user-friendly charging solutions. Depending on specification, it offers up to 252 miles of range (WLTP) and rapid charging from 15–80% in about 30 minutes. Notably, it qualifies for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, making it one of the most affordable EVs in its segment, with prices starting at £21,495 on the road.
Sponsored by Start Rescue, a leading UK breakdown provider, this year’s UK Car of the Year Awards underline the growing significance of electric vehicles in the British automotive landscape.
