BMW Begins Electric 3 Series Era

BMW has opened early orders for the new BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition, giving customers the opportunity to secure the all-electric saloon ahead of its official UK launch in Autumn 2026.

The model is expected to become one of the most significant vehicles in BMW’s history, bringing fully electric power to the heart of the premium executive saloon market while carrying forward the legacy of the 3 Series nameplate.

BMW says customer interest has been exceptionally strong since the vehicle’s unveiling earlier this year.

Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer, Brands and Sales, said:

“The new BMW i3 is a groundbreaking car for us. It enters a high-volume segment and is therefore extremely important for the BMW Group. The strong level of customer interest already confirms its appeal.”

Up To 563 Miles Between Charges

One of the headline figures is the i3’s claimed range of up to 563 miles (WLTP), placing it among the longest-range electric cars announced for the European market.

Power comes from BMW’s latest sixth-generation eDrive system, combining dual electric motors and all-wheel drive to produce:

  • 469hp
  • 645Nm of torque
  • 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds
  • Up to 563 miles WLTP range

The i3 uses a new 108.7kWh battery and 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing ultra-fast charging. BMW claims drivers can add up to 263 miles of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a compatible 400kW rapid charger.

Bidirectional charging capability is also included, allowing the vehicle to supply energy externally when required.

Fresh Design But Familiar BMW DNA

While introducing a completely new design language, BMW has ensured the i3 remains instantly recognisable as part of the 3 Series family.

The saloon features a long wheelbase, short overhangs and muscular wheel arches that reinforce its sporting character. A reinterpreted BMW kidney grille and slim lighting signature modernise the front-end design, while distinctive rear light graphics create a wider and more planted stance.

Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW, said:

“The BMW 3 Series has embodied driving pleasure, innovation and timeless design for over 50 years. With this vehicle, we are writing the next chapter in that success story.”

Technology Designed Around The Driver

Inside, BMW introduces an entirely new digital cockpit centred around its Panoramic iDrive operating system.

The standout feature is BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects key information across the lower width of the windscreen. This is complemented by a new 3D Head-Up Display positioned directly in the driver’s line of sight.

BMW has also integrated advanced AI-powered voice control, enabling more natural interaction with navigation, media and vehicle functions through the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The result is a cabin designed to reduce distraction while placing key information exactly where drivers need it.

New Platform Promises Sharper Driving Dynamics

BMW claims the i3 delivers a major leap in driving performance thanks to a new control architecture known as the “Heart of Joy”.

The system manages acceleration, braking, steering and energy recuperation significantly faster than previous BMW platforms, helping deliver smoother responses and greater precision.

A new Soft Stop function has also been developed to eliminate the abrupt braking sensation often associated with electric vehicles, improving passenger comfort during everyday driving.

Advanced Driver Assistance

The new i3 also introduces BMW’s latest assisted driving technologies.

Among the highlights is Motorway Assistant, which enables hands-free motorway driving at speeds of up to 81mph or the prevailing national speed limit, subject to conditions.

Drivers remain responsible for the vehicle, but BMW’s system allows natural steering, braking and acceleration inputs without disengaging active assistance functions.

First Edition Brings High Specification As Standard

Available from launch, the First Edition builds on the M Sport model with a generous list of additional equipment.

Standard features include:

  • BMW Iconic Glow illuminated grille
  • BMW 3D Head-Up Display
  • Harman Kardon surround sound system
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Electrically adjustable multifunction front seats
  • Three-zone climate control
  • Sun protection glazing
  • Automatic tailgate operation
  • 22kW AC charging capability

Customers can also specify options including a panoramic glass roof, rear seat heating, electrically deployable tow bar and BMW Digital Premium connected services.

Pricing And Availability

The BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition is available to order now from £57,905 OTR.

When the full range launches in Autumn 2026, the standard BMW i3 50 xDrive will be priced from £53,005 OTR and offer a maximum WLTP range of up to 567 miles.

Motoring Echo Insight

BMW’s decision to electrify the spiritual successor to the 3 Series may prove to be one of the most important moments in the brand’s modern history. For decades, the 3 Series has defined the premium compact executive sector. The challenge now is whether traditional BMW buyers are ready to embrace an electric future.

On paper, the new i3 answers many of the concerns still surrounding EV ownership. Range anxiety is addressed with a claimed 563 miles between charges, while 800-volt charging technology promises significantly shorter charging stops.

If BMW can deliver those figures in real-world conditions, the i3 may not only become the benchmark electric BMW—it could become the benchmark electric saloon against which rivals are measured.
