Volvo Car USA has announced the sale of its 5 millionth new car in the United States, coinciding with its 70th anniversary in the market. This milestone highlights the company’s commitment to growth, safety, and community impact.

The sale, which took place on March 29, 2025, involved a 2025 Volvo XC60 purchased by Erin Taylor at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, Illinois— a partner with over 30 years of service in the Chicago area.

Since arriving in America in 1955, we have been dedicated to providing a unique blend of safety, design, and performance,” said Michael Cottone, President of Volvo Car USA and Canada. “Reaching this milestone reflects the dedication of our retail partners and employees. We look forward to serving more customers with our lineup of electric and hybrid vehicles that fit their lifestyles.”

A Brief History

Volvo’s journey in the U.S. began in 1955 with the arrival of Swedish-built PV444s, leading to 5,047 cars sold by 1956. By 1974, the U.S. became Volvo’s largest market, showcasing its enduring popularity.

Innovation in Safety

In 1959, Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin introduced the three-point safety belt, which was later made standard in the U.S. and has saved over a million lives. In 1976, Volvo’s Lambda sensor technology revolutionized exhaust emission control, leading to a significant reduction in harmful emissions.

Community Commitment

As of 2025, Volvo Car USA has a network of 281 retailers across 48 states, employing about 11,500 people. In 2015, Volvo opened its first U.S. production plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, now producing the fully electric Volvo EX90.

With the sale of its 5 millionth car, Volvo Cars reinforces its commitment to safety, sustainability, and innovation, with plans to celebrate its anniversary through special incentives and consumer events throughout the year.
