A study has revealed that used combustion engine models cost, on average, £2,560 more than comparable electric models from the same manufacturer, representing a 10% difference.

CarGurus, a leading automotive marketplace in the U.K., examined the average prices of electric vehicles (EVs) in comparison to their petrol-powered counterparts from the last four model years to identify which offers the best value.

The study examined second-hand listings from the U.K.’s top 30 manufacturers, showcasing brands such as Skoda, Mazda, VW, Jaguar, and Renault. The 2021 Mazda MX-30 was identified as the best-value EV, costing 28% less than the ICE CX-30 (£12,180 compared to £16,960 at the end of 2024). Likewise, the 2021 Jaguar I-Pace was 22% more affordable than the F-Pace, and the 2022 Skoda Enyaq was 19% cheaper than the Kodiaq.

The findings suggest buyers should consider electric vehicles (EVs) aged three to four years for the best value. CarGurus also noted that EVs usually have 18% fewer miles than similar internal combustion engine (ICE) models, enhancing their appeal.

Chris Knapman, Editorial Director at CarGurus U.K., stated, “The days of electric cars costing significantly more than petrol or diesel equivalents are behind us in the used market.” He emphasised that now is a great time to consider electric vehicles due to their considerable savings and lower running costs.
