Mario Andretti, the 1978 Formula 1 World Champion, will return to this year’s Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard. Over the event’s four days, Mario will drive his championship-winning Lotus 79 up the Goodwood Hill, celebrating 75 years of the F1 World Championship.
Mario, originally from Italy and now an American racing legend, is known for his versatility on the track. With over 100 career wins across various disciplines, he is one of only two drivers to win in Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and World Championship Sports Car racing. He uniquely holds victories in the Daytona 500 (1967), Indy 500 (1969), and the Formula 1 World Championship (1978). In 1978, he even managed to compete in eight IndyCar races while securing his F1 title.
Mario comes from a renowned racing family, with multiple family members, including his sons Michael and Jeff, having competed at the top level. Even today, he remains active in motorsport, driving a two-seater IndyCar and serving on the board of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, set to debut in 2026.
At this year’s Festival, Mario will join fellow legend Alain Prost and others, as they commemorate the 75th anniversary of Formula 1. Mario expressed his excitement, stating, “I have attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed many times, and I’m ready for another run up the hill in my Lotus 79. It’s a memorable experience with a wonderful community of car enthusiasts.”
The Duke of Richmond added, “I am thrilled that Mario will be joining us this year. He is a true motorsport hero and has mastered every discipline in which he competed. It is always a pleasure to welcome him, especially during this major F1 celebration.”
