When ‘Goodwood’ and ‘Mini’ are mentioned together, the St. Mary’s Trophy historic touring car races at Goodwood Revival immediately come to mind. However, this year will be different.

For 2025, the St. Mary’s Trophy will return with a grid of pre-1960 touring cars, marking the first time the classic Mini can compete. Austin Cars Ltd, a newly established company, plans to showcase two classic Minis, created in partnership with established firms in historic motoring.

Mark Burnett, Managing Director of Austin Cars Ltd, explains, “At Burlen, we’ve produced classic car parts under the Austin name for years. Creating something for adults—a simple, nostalgic car—has been in the works for a while.”

Owens Fabrication in Wales produced the body shells and roll cages, aiming to replicate the 1959 model while maintaining a production car feel. Swiftune Engineering supplies full race-spec engines.

The cars resemble early production Minis, with subtle modifications, steel wheels, and a raised ride height. They will be powered by a less potent version of the classic A-Series engine and will premiere in Farina Grey at the 2025 Goodwood Revival.

Minis are beloved at Goodwood, and I’m excited to see them race in this event,” says Will Kinsman, Goodwood’s Editorial and Content Director.

Mark Burnett and Nick Swift from Swiftune will drive the Minis, alongside co-drivers Karun Chandhok and Darren Turner, as the actual race will be split into two parts, with results based on combined finishing times, ending with an exciting finale on Sunday evening.

Burnett concluded, “It’s a pleasure to present our 1959 Austin Minis at Goodwood and hints at future plans for Austin Cars.”
