Warrantywise estimates that the average repair cost for the UK’s ten most popular used cars in 2024 has risen by 20% compared to 2023. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that repair costs are now significantly higher, with some models experiencing nearly a 30% increase.

Popular Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Astra models see the steepest rise, with their average repair costs jumping by £228 (25 per cent more) and £234 (28 per cent more), respectively. The ‘Lowest Increase in Average Repair Cost Award’ comfortably goes to the Volkswagen Polo, which rises by just 3 per cent (£22).

The Ford Fiesta, now discontinued, saw its average repair cost increase by £228 (25%), making it the most affected vehicle, followed closely by the Vauxhall Astra, which rose by £234 (28%). In contrast, the Volkswagen Polo had the smallest increase, with a rise of just £22 (3%).

Antony Diggins, Managing Director of Warrantywise, noted that the rising repair costs are a significant concern for car owners, particularly amid the UK’s ongoing economic challenges. He emphasised the importance of making informed decisions when buying used cars and urged buyers to consult Warrantywise’s Reliability Index for insights into vehicle reliability.

Despite a decline in the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), which fell from 7.3% in 2023 to 2.5% in December 20242, vehicle repair costs remain high. Warrantywise warns that motorists with used cars out of warranty may face the greatest financial impact.
