The Volkswagen Golf was named the “Best Car of the Half Century” at the Best Cars of the Year—The New Car World Championships. This was announced at the British Motor Show, where the latest improved version of the iconic model was showcased. Visitors at the show had the opportunity to examine the car and also had a say in the overall vote.
The judging panel for the awards is made up of independent and well-known car designers, engineers, auto industry figures, motorsport personalities, journalists, broadcasters, media professionals, vehicle retailers, automotive consultants, motor club chiefs, and motoring event organizers.
Among the judges who voted for the Golf were John Oates, a car enthusiast and a member of the Hall and Oates music duo, and automotive journalist Mike Rutherford, the founder of the awards.
Mike Rutherford said, “Some manufacturers struggle to keep their ‘most important’ models in production for five years. The fact that Volkswagen has successfully produced and sold petrol, diesel, pure-electric, and hybrid versions of the Golf worldwide for 50 years speaks for itself. Since the early 1980s, when I bought my first brand new Mk I version, I’ve bought numerous Golfs or used them as company cars. They were often described as all the cars you’ll ever need, and that’s as true today as it was back then.”
The Golf, with over 37 million sales to date, is Volkswagen’s most successful car, outselling even the legendary Beetle. Over its 50 years of production, “Golf” has become synonymous with the entire class of cars it represents. Its appeal has been further broadened through highly-regarded versions such as the Cabriolet, R, and GTI.
