The new Audi A5 range, starting from £48,950 for the Quattro Technik, is built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). It is expanding its lineup to include a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the first time. This addition enhances comfort and technology for everyday mobility. It features a new high-voltage battery that offers around 45% higher capacity, providing an electric range of up to 67 miles for UK models.
With a striking design and advanced engine technology, the new A5 family signifies the next chapter in Audi’s history of mid-size cars. The PHEV showcases the “e-hybrid” designation for straightforward recognition.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner states, “We aim to significantly expand our range of plug-in hybrids during 2025,” highlighting a balance of performance and efficiency. The A5 Avant e-hybrid and A5 Saloon e-hybrid both have a 2.0 TFSI engine (252 PS) combined with a 142 PS electric motor, totaling 299 PS.
The enhanced battery, now at 25.9 kWh, charges from 0 to 100% in 2.5 hours using 11 kW. The A5 e-hybrids can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, achieving a top speed of 155 mph, with fuel consumption ranging from 108.6 to 141.1 mpg.
Audi has enhanced regenerative braking, enabling drivers to adjust energy recovery in electric vehicle (EV) mode. The hybrid management system optimises efficiency and comfort, allowing operation in either exclusive electric mode or hybrid mode while maintaining charge levels for future use. Users can select the desired charge level using a digital slider.
The new A5 plug-in hybrid is equipped with a high-voltage battery (HV battery) located at the rear, featuring a capacity of 25.9 kWh (20.7 kWh net), which marks a 45 percent increase compared to the previous A6 TFSI e. Nevertheless, the installation space has only marginally expanded, with the battery dimensions being 992 × 996 × 177 mm. The enhanced interaction between the mechanical friction brake and the electric motor has improved regenerative braking performance.
In the A5 e-hybrid, battery cells are arranged in a single layer to optimize space. Each prismatic cell now stores about 46 percent more energy than previous models, with a charge capacity of 70 ampere-hours (Ah). The battery’s energy is housed in 17 stacks, with six stacks forming a unit.
Audi uses a cell-to-pack approach, gluing cells directly into the battery housing rather than using modules. This method increases packing density, allowing for greater energy content and density. Recent advances in cell chemistry also enhance electrical output, even at low charge levels and lower temperatures.
The AC charging power has been boosted from 7.4 kW to 11 kW, reducing the time to fully charge the HV battery to just 2.5 hours. A mode 3 Type 2 charging cable is included for convenient home and on-the-go charging. Audi’s charging service provides access to numerous AC charging points in 29 European countries upon request.
The A5 e-hybrid has significantly enhanced regenerative braking compared to the previous A6 PHEV, aiming to maximise electric power utilisation. Overrun recuperation is adjusted according to the driving mode, and automatic recuperation is available in drive levels D and M. The vehicle employs route data and traffic conditions to optimise energy recovery.
During deceleration, the A5 Avant and A5 Saloon e-hybrid quattro can recover up to 88 kW of power, with the electric motor handling over 90 per cent of deceleration. The integrated brake control system guarantees smooth braking and optimal energy recovery, with hydraulic brakes deployed only for more intense stops. This arrangement does not influence the driver’s braking feel, as the brake pedal and hydraulics are decoupled.
The new A5’s initial range will consist of eight models, starting from £48,950 OTR and going up to the Avant Quattro Edition 1 at £60,520 OTR.
