British Industry Alliance Forms Team Grenadier

INEOS Automotive has partnered with defence specialists SMT Defence and NMS UK to create Team Grenadier, a UK-focused industrial collaboration designed to deliver a range of military vehicles based on the highly capable INEOS Grenadier 4×4 platform.

The partnership has been established with the Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle programme firmly in its sights, combining proven off-road capability with specialist military integration expertise and UK-based manufacturing support.

According to the companies involved, the collaboration is intended to provide a resilient and sovereign supply chain solution while supporting the MoD’s operational requirements and wider defence procurement objectives.

Grenadier Platform Provides Military Foundation

At the heart of the proposal is the INEOS Grenadier, a vehicle originally engineered to prioritise durability, simplicity and off-road capability.

Built around a heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis with permanent four-wheel drive, beam axles and substantial payload capacity, the Grenadier has already established a reputation for operating in demanding environments where reliability is critical.

These core attributes make it a strong candidate for military adaptation across a variety of operational roles, ranging from troop transport and logistics support to specialist mission-specific applications.

Specialist Defence Expertise Added

SMT Defence contributes extensive experience in designing and integrating bespoke military vehicles for specialist and elite military units.

Its expertise includes modular vehicle architecture, survivability-focused design and mission-specific adaptations, allowing the Grenadier platform to be rapidly configured to meet changing operational requirements.

Meanwhile, NMS UK provides established military vehicle manufacturing, integration and through-life support capabilities, bringing experience gained from armoured and protected vehicle programmes.

The company will play a key role in ensuring fleet readiness, long-term service support and production scalability should the programme progress.

Nine Potential Vehicle Configurations

One of the key strengths of the proposal is its modular approach.

The Grenadier Multi-Role Light Vehicle (MRLV) forms part of a wider family of nine potential Light Mobility Vehicle variants, all built around the same robust Grenadier chassis architecture.

This common-platform approach offers potential advantages in training, maintenance, parts availability and lifecycle costs while providing flexibility across multiple military applications.

The underlying vehicle platform has already proven itself in demanding operational environments worldwide through deployment with fire, rescue and police organisations.

Focus on UK Capability and Supply Chain Security

Speaking about the collaboration, Mike Whittington, Chief Commercial Officer at INEOS Automotive, highlighted the strategic advantages of a domestically supported programme.

“A defining advantage of the industrial collaboration is its British ownership, onshore assembly and local supply chain. It brings strategic benefits in operational independence and resilience with security and regulatory alignment – delivering on the MoD’s core objectives. Grenadier’s unrivalled capability and inherent strength provide an obvious starting point for mission-critical transport.”

The emphasis on UK assembly and domestic industrial participation aligns closely with growing government focus on supply chain resilience, sovereign capability and long-term supportability within defence procurement programmes.

Motoring Echo Perspective

The formation of Team Grenadier represents another significant step in the evolution of the INEOS Grenadier beyond its civilian roots. While the vehicle was originally conceived as a rugged utility 4×4 for commercial and private users, its ladder-frame construction and mechanical simplicity have increasingly attracted interest from emergency services, specialist operators and defence organisations.

With defence procurement increasingly favouring adaptable platforms that can be produced and supported domestically, Team Grenadier’s combination of British manufacturing, specialist defence engineering and established vehicle capability could position it as a strong contender within future UK military vehicle programmes.

As the Ministry of Defence continues its modernisation efforts, the ability to deliver flexible, mission-ready vehicles backed by resilient UK supply chains may prove just as important as outright capability in the field.
