There’s no denying that the new BMW M5 is a bit heavy. The previous-generation super-saloon weighed 1,895 kg, while the new model is 540 kg heavier. This increase is largely due to the plug-in hybrid V8 engine, which produces an impressive 140 bhp more and offers 184 lb-ft more torque than its predecessor, alongside a remarkably efficient 160 mpg+ on the WLTP fuel test.

While these figures may have seemed appealing during BMW’s development phase years ago, car enthusiasts are not exactly embracing electrified performance vehicles in 2024.

However, this is still an all-new BMW M5! It has a legendary status, consistently regarded as the top performer in its class, particularly compared to rivals from Audi and Mercedes.

Although there hasn’t yet been a new AMG version of the E-Class, and Audi is soon to end production of the RS6 and RS7, the M5 remains strong with its powerful V8 engine. Downsizing is not an option here! Therefore, what truly matters is how this new M5 performs behind the wheel.

Let’s hear from Tom Gear Magazine’s Associate Editor, Tom Ford, for the final verdict.
