According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of vehicles on British roads reached a record high in 2024, rising by 1.4 per cent.
In 2024, 1.953 million new cars were registered, up for the third consecutive year, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for almost 20 per cent of the market. Van usage also increased similarly, while heavy goods vehicle volumes remained stable, with a slight decline.
The vehicle fleet is undergoing decarbonisation. Plug-in vehicles have increased by 34.6 per cent and now represent approximately 5 per cent of all vehicles. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have seen significant growth, accounting for nearly 4 per cent of cars on the road.
Petrol power continues to dominate the market, accounting for approximately 21 million vehicles. Diesel vehicles decreased slightly to around 12 million, holding a market share of 32 per cent. Average car CO2 emissions fell slightly, while the average age of cars on the road rose to 9.5 years.

The commercial vehicle sector is also approaching decarbonisation, with a nearly 81 percent increase in zero-emission buses. Battery electric vans rose by some 32 per cent. Electric trucks account for less than 1 per cent of the total vehicle parc.
The five most popular cars on UK roads in 2024 accounted for over 5 million vehicles in use. The Ford Fiesta is at the top of the charts, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, and the Volkswagen Polo in that order.
