Motorway service stations are where Brits unite in search of clean restrooms, great coffee, and tasty meals. A new survey of 2,000 drivers by Isuzu UK reveals the nation’s favourite stops, with cleanliness, spotless toilets, free parking, quality food, and an on-site farm shop topping motorists’ wish lists.
While some of the usual suspects remain at the bottom of the league tables, drivers have crowned a thrilling new set of heroes—service stations that champion fresh food and fantastic outdoor facilities!
Bursting onto the top of the list is the much-loved Gloucester Services (20%) on the M5! This family-owned gem, run in partnership with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, has captured the nation’s heart.
Gloucester Services dazzles visitors with incredible food made from scratch in its kitchens and a farm shop brimming with products from 130 local producers—all found within 30 miles!
Tebay Services on the M6 roars into second place (17%), proving that a pit stop can be a highlight of your journey! Owned by a passionate Cumbrian farming family, Tebay champions a community of local farmers and makers with its outstanding farm shop and kitchen.
Beaconsfield Services (11%) on the M40 also shines on the list, celebrated as one of Europe’s most attractive service stations thanks to its gorgeous lakeside terrace and preserved woodlands. Not to be outdone, West Yorkshire’s Wetherby Services (11%) delights with its dedicated dog walking area, EV superhub, showers, and washing machines—making pit stops that much more enjoyable!
The list of best service stations also includes Rugby Services (11%), located on the M6 in Warwickshire; Surrey’s Cobham Services (11%) on the M25; and Stafford North Services (8%).
The research found that British motorists also recommend Leeds Skelton Lake Services (7%) on the M1; M40’s Oxford Services (7%); Hampshire’s Fleet Services (7%); the South Mimms Services (7%), based in Hertfordshire, and Membury Services (6%), which is located on the M4 on the Berkshire/ Wiltshire border.
Heston Services (M4) (6%) is the surprise star of the list! Once the butt of jokes among weary commuters, it has staged a spectacular comeback. Drivers now cheer its fresh refurbishments, sparkling restrooms, and exciting new food outlets.
The survey also shows just how essential a great service station stop is—motorists visit an average of 25 per year, and a whopping 38% even plan their journeys around their favourite stops!
Great coffee (29%), a lively atmosphere (14%), and plenty of charging points (8%) for EV drivers are also high on the list! Interestingly, EV drivers (23%) spend the longest at service stations—an average of 34 minutes—thanks to charging needs. While 5% wish for more charging points, a reassuring 21% believe there are usually plenty available.
Almost half (49%) of the 2,000 Britons surveyed admit they’ve turned on their heels and walked out when a service station didn’t meet their high standards—showing just how much we care about quality on the road!
George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, sums it up: “It’s clear there are some truly outstanding service stations across Britain! At Isuzu UK, we know our D-Max pickup drivers work hard everywhere—on motorways, muddy fields, and in essential industries like farming, construction, engineering, and utilities.
