MUK editorial comment… It’s clear that consumers need electric vehicles of all makes and sizes to be as user-friendly as going to a filling station to refuel an ICE-powered vehicle. The availability of EV charging points, apps, and providers has grown dramatically, but there is still a long way to go to meet the necessary standards. However, Polestar is moving in the right direction.

Polestar has introduced a new feature called Plug & Charge for its flagship SUV, the Polestar 3, and its Polestar Charge App. This feature makes public charging for customers much easier.

With the Polestar Charge App acting as a digital wallet, the car can authenticate the user and communicate directly with compatible public chargers. This allows for automatic processing and eliminates the typical steps of setting up a charging session.

Upon reaching the desired location, customers can plug in their Polestar 3 to the charging station and enjoy a seamless charging process. Plug & Charge is available at over 9,500 High-Power Charging points, including selected Ionity and Mer locations.

After arriving at the desired location, customers can plug their Polestar 3 into the charging station and enjoy a seamless charging process.

Lutz Stiegler, Polestar’s CTO, stated, “With Plug & Charge, we offer a premium service to Polestar 3 customers that makes charging their car on the road as easy and hassle-free as possible. This advanced technology will make a real difference to customers’ daily lives, and we’re excited to bring it to Polestar 3 first, with other models in our range to follow soon after.”

This new functionality means Polestar 3 drivers no longer need to select the correct charging location, confirm which individual charger they are connected to, and then initiate payment to authenticate the charging session via the Polestar Charge App or with the Polestar Charge card. When Plug & Charge is activated, the car communicates directly with the charger itself, and payment is processed directly – removing multiple steps from the traditional process.

Lutz Stiegler, CTO of Polestar, says “With Plug & Charge we offer a premium service to Polestar 3 customers that makes charging their car on the road as easy and hassle-free as possible.

Polestar 3 drivers should activate the function in the vehicle’s charging settings and connect it to the Polestar Charge App (or other E-mobility Service Provider). The Polestar Charge app offers access to over 800,000 public charging points across Europe and subscription-based fast charging with discounted rates at thousands of public charging locations, ensuring that Plug & Charge is more convenient for customers and better value.

This feature is available in Polestar 3 now, with other models planned to gain the functionality in 2025.
