Audi Sport has introduced the all-new RS 5 Saloon and Avant, marking the debut of plug-in hybrid technology in the RS range. Priced from £89,400 and £91,300 in the UK, these models feature a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine paired with a 130kW electric motor, delivering a combined 510PS and an electric-only range of up to 52 miles. UK deliveries are expected to begin in the summer.

Design and Exterior

The RS 5 Saloon and Avant showcase signature RS styling with flared arches, prominent detailing, and large wheels. The front features the distinctive honeycomb Singleframe grille, dark mask, and pronounced Air Curtains for improved aerodynamics. Vents and shoulder line blisters reference the classic Audi Ur quattro. At the rear, the models sport centrally positioned oval tailpipes within an aerodynamic diffuser and a motorsport-inspired red reflector.

Audi UK Director José Miguel Aparicio described the RS 5 as the start of a new era for the brand, highlighting the combination of usability, performance, and innovation brought by plug-in hybrid technology.

Model Variants

UK buyers can select from three specifications: RS 5, RS 5 Carbon Black, and RS 5 performance Vorsprung.

The standard RS 5 is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels in dark Galvano silver and a black styling package, including gloss black trim elements and badges. Matrix LED headlights with active light signatures and a rear illuminated light strip complete the look.

The Carbon Black specification adds 21-inch Neodymium grey matte alloy wheels and high gloss carbon finishes on exterior elements, including the spoiler, mirrors, and diffuser.

The range-topping RS 5 performance Vorsprung features exclusive RS performance bumpers, enlarged air intakes, matte black tailpipes, and an RS sport exhaust for a distinctive look and sound.

Phantom Black 21-inch alloy wheels and carbon camouflage trim further distinguish the RS 5 performance Vorsprung.

This variant also introduces second-generation Digital OLED taillights with selectable digital signatures, including a chequered flag option, and an integrated communication light for enhanced safety.

Interior and Technology

The RS 5 cabin features sport seats with massage and ventilation, a heated RS sport steering wheel, and interior accents in Vanadium-effect and aluminium. Premium materials such as Fine Nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre with contrast stitching enhance the luxury feel.

Carbon Black models include carbon twill inlays, while Vorsprung variants receive matching carbon camouflage interior trim. Top versions also feature unique upholstery and Dinamica-trimmed steering wheels.

A curved OLED Audi MMI Panorama display combines an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI Touch screen. All models include a head-up display and a 10.9-inch passenger display.

The infotainment system displays real-time data on the hybrid powertrain, while RS-specific dials in the virtual cockpit provide detailed performance metrics and a shift light for the eight-speed Tiptronic transmission.

Performance Analysis

The Audi driving experience function records driver inputs, acceleration data, and lap times, providing in-depth analysis for enthusiasts, especially on track days.

The system includes pre-configured famous race circuit profiles and can automatically create new track profiles for private racetracks.

Performance

The combined output of 639PS and 825Nm enables the RS 5 to accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. A boost function delivers maximum acceleration for ten seconds. Top speeds reach 155mph for standard and Carbon Black models, and 177mph for the Vorsprung edition.

Handling

Bespoke RS sport suspension with twin-valve shock absorbers, a new quattro drivetrain, and rear electromechanical torque vectoring provide agility and driving precision. The Dynamic Torque Control system shifts power between wheels in milliseconds for top-tier handling.

Charging and Efficiency

Energy recuperation during braking and coasting recharges the battery, which can also be fully charged at up to 11kW in as little as 2.5 hours when plugged in.

Summary

The all-new Audi RS 5 Saloon and Avant usher in a new era for Audi Sport, combining electrified performance with luxury and advanced technology. With three specification levels, standout design, cutting-edge interior features, and impressive power and efficiency, the RS 5 plug-in hybrid models set a new benchmark for high-performance vehicles.
