BMW and SOLARWATT Expand Joint Partnership

BMW and SOLARWATT are strengthening their partnership to deliver holistic, optimised home energy solutions.

The companies have been collaborating on electric mobility and home energy storage since 2013.

BMW and SOLARWATT are deepening their partnership to advance smart energy and home charging solutions across Europe.

The launch of the Neue Klasse models, the BMW iX3 and BMW i3, marks the start of BMW’s bidirectional charging technology rollout.

After introducing Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) service in March 2026, BMW now extends Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology to iX3 and i3 drivers, enabling broader use of this capability.

Rising electrification in transport and homes presents new opportunities for integrated, optimised energy solutions.

BMW and SOLARWATT are working to fully integrate electric vehicles into the household. The SOLARWATT Manager, a home energy management system (HEMS), will act as the interface between car and home.

The SOLARWATT HEMS centrally manages and optimises household energy flows, enhancing generation, storage, and consumption efficiency.

The electric vehicle becomes an additional storage unit, seamlessly connecting with the home’s photovoltaic system, battery storage, and appliances.

Integration is achieved by pairing BMW Neue Klasse models with the bidirectional BMW Wallbox Professional, which both charges the car and supplies energy back to the home when required.

The integration of bidirectional BMW vehicles with SOLARWATT’s new HEMS for V2H applications will launch in late 2026 in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.

BMW and SOLARWATT have collaborated on electromobility since 2013. In 2021, they launched a home storage system using BMW electric vehicle battery components. The 2025 successor, SOLARWATT Battery Vision, features design by BMW Designworks USA.

Smart Connectivity: Harmonising Energy Management and Home Integration
Since the Neue Klasse launch, BMW has turned to V2H technology for bidirectional charging, solar energy use, and lower energy costs.

BMW now expands its offering to integrate home networks for optimal energy management. Intelligent coordination of all components—car, Wallbox, HEMS, storage, and appliances—creates a holistic, efficient home energy system.

Homeowners manage settings via the My BMW App and SOLARWATT Home app. The electric car stores surplus solar power. SOLARWATT Manager also integrates dynamic electricity rates and solar forecasts to optimise charging, reduce costs, and boost self-sufficiency.

SOLARWATT Manager is open to third-party storage systems, allowing for a flexible, expandable home energy solution.

Overall Optimisation: Electric Car Enhances Home Storage
“Owners of Neue Klasse cars such as the BMW iX3 can use their vehicles as extra storage for solar power, increasing self-consumption and reducing reliance on grid electricity. Expanding home battery systems with an electric car is appealing, as it boosts PV system benefits and lowers energy costs,” says SOLARWATT CPO Peter Bachmann.

“Bidirectional charging offers great promise for the energy transition, as EV batteries form a vast storage reserve. Intelligent integration into energy markets and homes can relieve grid strain, support renewables, and provide extra storage capacity quickly and affordably,” adds Marcus Krieg, Vice President New Business, BMW Group.

Market Launch and Future Strategy
After the next milestone at Intersolar (The Smarter E), we’ll move the project step by step toward market launch at year’s end.

BMW and SOLARWATT prioritise seamless interaction between all home and vehicle components, delivering an integrated customer experience and reinforcing their leadership in connected energy solutions.
