GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging drivers to understand the changes to the Highway Code that took effect on January 29, 2022. These changes aim to make those who can cause the most harm more responsible for keeping others safe. Key updates include:
- Prioritising pedestrians at junctions.
- Drivers must yield to cyclists going straight when turning.
- Establishing safe distances when overtaking cyclists and horse riders.
- Using the “Dutch Reach” method to avoid hitting cyclists when opening car doors.
Despite these changes, many drivers still lack awareness and understanding of their new responsibilities. In 2023, there were 405 pedestrian fatalities and 87 cyclist deaths in Great Britain, with thousands more seriously injured.
James Luckhurst, GEM’s head of road safety, noted that surveys show half of drivers are unaware of these rules, which could lead to confusion and conflict on the roads.
GEM urges the government to implement a clear communication campaign to inform drivers about these changes.
Key actions for drivers include:
- Being vigilant at junctions and yielding to pedestrians and cyclists.
- Maintaining safe passing distances for vulnerable road users.
- Allowing at least 1.5 meters when overtaking cyclists and at least two meters for horses.
- Driving at a maximum of 10 mph when passing horses.
- Exercising extra caution when turning and adjusting driving behavior to minimize harm.
