Prospect of Changes To Driver Eyesight Regulations Welcomed

Reform of the current regime is ‘long overdue’, says GEM!

It is essential to decrease the number of people of all ages who drive with impaired vision.

GEM Motoring Assist is pleased to support proposed changes to UK driver eyesight regulations, recognising that mandatory eyesight tests are a positive step forward. The organisation believes all drivers, regardless of age, should undergo these essential checks and encourages the government to implement an effective communication strategy alongside the changes.

James Luckhurst, GEM’s head of road safety, passionately emphasised that regular eyesight tests are essential for safeguarding all road users from potential hazards caused by visual impairments. He highlighted that many drivers, even those under 70, might be unaware of their worsening eyesight.

To improve overall safety, GEM recommends that all licence holders undergo professional eye tests every two years. This measure aims to enhance road safety for everyone while ensuring no particular age group is unfairly targeted.

Luckhurst also emphasised the importance of engaging all road users, particularly those who may not prioritise safety. By fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility, we can all help create safer roads for everyone!
