According to Start Rescue, an increasing number of drivers are experiencing financial burdens and becoming stranded due to a £17 billion backlog in pothole repairs. The leading breakdown provider has reported a 44.7% increase in pothole-related call-outs since October 2024.
“Drivers are dealing with flat tyres, damaged wheels, and broken suspensions, leading to high repair costs,” said Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue. “We need urgent action to improve road safety.”
The ALARM survey conducted by the Asphalt Industry Alliance indicates that the backlog for carriageway repairs in England and Wales has reached a record high of nearly £17 billion. David Giles, Chair of the AIA, highlighted that despite over £20 billion being spent on maintenance in the last decade, there has been no significant improvement in road conditions.
