GEM Motoring Assist emphasises the importance of checking your vehicle’s batteries, tyres, and fuel levels before driving on the motorway to reduce the risk of breakdowns.
James Luckhurst, GEM’s head of road safety, noted that over 500 breakdowns occur daily on English motorways, most of which could be avoided with regular maintenance and checks.
Before Your Journey:

- Check batteries, tyres, and ensure adequate fuel or charge.
If You Break Down:
- Try to exit at the next junction or service area, or pull over to the hard shoulder.
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- If safe, exit via the passenger door and move behind the safety barrier.
- Do not attempt repairs or place a warning triangle.
- Call National Highways at 0300 123 5000, then your breakdown provider.
- In an emergency, stay in your vehicle with seatbelts fastened and call 999.
