The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz offers seven-seater practicality with a third row of seats. A group of rugby legends, including British & Irish Lions stars, was challenged to see if they could fit all seven of their broad shoulders and up to 6ft 9in frames inside the vehicle. Among the all-star lineup were former England captain Lewis Moody, Irish Grand Slam-winning captain Rory Best, and former Wales centre Jamie Roberts.
Once fierce rivals on the pitch, the sports legends gathered for a light-hearted reunion to catch up on life after rugby. With Moody behind the wheel, the group completed their all-star 7’s team by picking up former Scotland second-row Jim Hamilton, ex-England back-row Martin Corry, France’s legendary flanker Serge Betsen, and Ireland’s Shane Horgan.
This epic reunion featured lively discussions about their playing days. The players swapped stories about team bus antics and shared insights into their transitions into post-playing careers as they moved from tour buses to school buses.
In hilarious dashcam footage, viewers got a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes jokes typical of a rugby changing room as the players interacted with IDA, the car’s voice assistant.
Reflecting on life after rugby, Moody stated, “As a kid, I was a huge VW fan. So when the ID. Buzz came out, I was immediately interested, and the kids loved it too. My wife usually prefers to drive, so I enjoyed getting behind the wheel again. The guys will agree—I was the best driver choice for the day! And being able to fit all the lads inside while still having room for our rugby gear in the boot is impressive!”
Jim Hamilton, the tallest among them at 6ft 9in, added, “Fitting into the back of most vehicles can be uncomfortable, but even though I was in the third row with Martin Corry, I was surprisingly comfortable with plenty of legroom. I have four kids who always argue about who has to sit in the middle so this car would be perfect for us!”
Eve Tyers, Head of Volkswagen’s marketing, commented, “It was incredible to reunite some of the game’s greats and see them get up close and personal with the new ID. Buzz. We wanted to demonstrate that if a crew of rugby legends can fit inside, so can you and your family!”
The ID. Buzz spans nearly five meters in length and offers three rows with five, six, or seven-seat configurations. It combines iconic design with electric mobility. This increased length not only provides more luggage space but also allows for a larger 86 kWh battery, resulting in an extended range. With the seven-seat layout, the ID. Buzz offers exceptional family-friendly flexibility, and the third row can be completely removed.
State-of-the-art infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems, and a versatile space concept provide a new standard for mobile comfort.
