Carwow’s Mat Watson and his team have got our hands on every generation of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, and they’re about to go head-to-head in an epic drag race!
They split the Drag Race into two heats – the Mk 1, 2, 3 & 4 in the first heat, after which we’ll have a second race with the 5, 6, 7 and 8.5 to see just how the Golf GTI has evolved over the years! It all starts with the Mk 1. It’s powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder that produces 110hp and 140Nm of torque. This power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual, and the car weighs in at just 810kg.
When it was new, it cost around £6,500. The line-up then goes up to the new Mk 8.5 edition, powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that puts down 265hp and 370Nm. This power is directed to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox weighing 1,391kg. As new, the car costs around £39,000. So, the newer car is likely to win, but will any of the older models spring a surprise?
