The BMW Group is the first automotive manufacturer to introduce a newly developed digital nervous system for all drivetrain variants and vehicle segments, set to debut in the Neue Klasse models. This system features four high-performance computers, known as “Superbrains,” which significantly enhance computing power for key functions like infotainment, automated driving, and climate control, offering over 20 times the computing capacity of current vehicles.

Frank Weber, Board Member for Development at BMW AG, stated, “Technological openness is key to BMW’s success. We will extend the technologies of the Neue Klasse across our entire future model portfolio, allowing all future BMW models to remain digitally updated through over-the-air upgrades.”

A key component of this digital nervous system is a simplified wiring harness based on a zonal architecture, reducing wiring by 600 meters and achieving a 30% weight savings. Additionally, “Smart eFuses” replace traditional fuses, allowing for intelligent energy distribution and a 20% improvement in energy efficiency.

This electronic architecture lays the foundation for the next generation of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), with the first fully electric model from the Neue Klasse slated for production later this year in Hungary. The advanced software architecture supports continuous development on stable platforms, enabling seamless updates and customer-relevant AI functions.

Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Electronics and Software, emphasized that this approach allows for ongoing software development rather than starting from scratch, positioning BMW favorably in the market as their development teams produce significantly more software than in the past.

For the Neue Klasse, development teams are creating over 1,000 software modules and more than 500 million lines of code for integration into the vehicle’s Superbrains and electronic systems. The BMW Group has built a strong foundation for effective vehicle software development, incorporating innovative methods and tools into a global developer network.

Central to this effort is “CodeCraft,” an integrated developer environment that enhances development speed and quality with generative AI assistance. Operating in the cloud on 75,000 virtual CPUs, CodeCraft supports over 10,000 developers and can handle up to 200,000 software builds daily, achieving more than a 130-fold increase in productivity compared to a decade ago.
