INEOS Automotive has inaugurated a €15 million biomass heat plant at its Hambach production site, boasting a 9.2-megawatt output. The plant will utilise up to 14,000 tonnes of sustainably sourced woodchips annually, supplying 78% of the site’s heating requirements.

Since 2019, over half a billion euros has been invested in Hambach, enhancing facilities with a fully automated body shop, a semi-automated paint shop, a quality inspection laboratory, and a water ingress testing wading pool. This expansion has increased the plant’s footprint by 60%, reaching 210,000 square metres.
The biomass plant, which includes two boilers delivering a combined thermal output of 8.4 megawatts alongside an 800-kilowatt heat pump, is anticipated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 8,800 tonnes each year. The waste ash generated will be repurposed into enriched fertiliser for local agriculture.
Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, noted that these investments guarantee world-class quality for their Grenadier and Quartermaster models. Philippe Steyer, president of INEOS Automotive SAS, emphasised that the biomass plant is integral to its ongoing commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
The Hambach Energy Transition project further strengthens this commitment, backed by a €3.9 million grant from France’s ADEME and an additional grant of up to €1.5 million from an agreement with Dalkia.
