Drivers should feel pressure only when checking their car’s tyres this Bank Holiday getaway, advises Start Rescue, a leading breakdown provider.
Keeping a tyre pressure gauge in the glovebox is an inexpensive way to ensure that tyres are properly inflated, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs), which are twice as likely to experience flat tyres.
“Properly inflated tyres provide the best handling, steering, braking, and fuel economy,” says Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue. “This also reduces tyre wear and the risk of breakdowns.”
With 14% of breakdowns for petrol and diesel cars caused by flat tyres—doubling to 28.6% for EVs—it’s crucial to check your tyres before traveling. A combined tyre pressure and tread depth gauge costs less than £10.
James Luckhurst, Road Safety Manager at the Guild of Experienced Motorists, emphasises that checking tyre pressures takes just a few minutes and can prevent dangerous blowouts.
Correct tyre pressure ratings can be found on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual. Puffett advises keeping a note of these pressures handy and adjusting them for extra luggage or passengers to ensure a safer trip.
