Verdict (read this first)
The Volvo EX30 is one of the most compelling small electric SUVs on sale right now, blending strong performance, modern design and competitive pricing.
But the “best version” depends heavily on what you actually want from it. The range, performance and usability vary significantly between models—so choosing the right one matters more here than with most rivals.
The EX30 Extended Range model is likely the sweet spot—but it’s not perfect.
What makes it stand out?
Volvo designed the EX30 to attract a new generation of EV buyers, with:
- a lower entry price than most premium EVs
- compact size for city driving
- minimalist Scandinavian design
It’s also one of Volvo’s smallest SUVs, aimed squarely at urban drivers and first-time EV buyers.
Range & real-world usability
There are three main versions, and this is where things get interesting:
- Standard Claimed range (51 kWh): ~200-210 miles
- Extended Range (69 kWh): ~295 miles
- Twin Motor AWD: ~280 miles
- Charging time: ~26 minutes (10–80%) using a fast charger
Useful and genuinely usable for longer trips, not just town/city driving!
Performance
The Volvo EX30 isn’t just efficient, it’s fast…
- Twin Motor version: 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds!
- One of the quickest cars at this particular pricing point
But this is the reality… It feels more like a quick, everyday SUV, but not, overall, a sporty one!
Driving experience
On the UK roads, the Volvo EX30 is seen as being:
- Easy for in town driving
- Comfortable on most surfaces (Avoiding the huge number of major UK Potholes, of course!)
- Capable and stable, especially on motorways
But:
- Not particularly classed as being engaging on twisty roads.
- The Volvo EX30 feels more tuned for comfort and efficiency than for pure fun. Which, a great many of Volvo owners, it has to be said, prefer.
- Probably best described as a smooth-commute vehicle, not a hot, sporty hatch or crossover.
Interior & tech
The EX30 goes all-in on minimalism:
- Single central touchscreen controls everything
- Very few physical buttons
- Clean, modern design
The tech is strong:
- Google built-in
- Fast, responsive interface
- 12.3-inch central display
But:
- The lack of physical controls can be frustrating (not really for us)
- Some functions are buried in menus (this can be a real frustration)
Pros
- Good performance for the price. (Range)
- The range is competitive, especially the Extended Range Models
- Stylish, modern interior
- Fast charging technology
Cons
- The minimalist control would not be our first choice!
- Rear space could be better
- Not top of the pops as an engaging drive.
- Range is still below some of the larger EV’s available.
Key rivals
- Rival 1: Tesla Model Y – Bigger, better charging network (as networks go!)
- Rival 2: Hyundai Electric Kona – bigger range of models
- Rival 3: Smart #1 – Similar sized platform, with a very different feel
Who should buy it?
- Seriously consider buying it if you want: Best overall Extended Range (miles)
- Serious consideration if you want: Performance with the Twin Motor version, as it is certainly quick. But of course, less efficient (less miles)
- The Standard model offers – The Cheapest in the sector, and it is probably best for Town/City use only. (A good all rounder)
Final MotoringEcho verdict
The Volvo EX30 is not just a good EV—it’s one of the most important small electric cars right now.
It lowers the barrier to entry for premium EV ownership while still delivering strong performance and everyday usability.
But to get the best out of it, you obviously need to choose the right version for YOU!
