GEM Motoring Assist advises drivers to prepare for Easter journeys to avoid delays and congestion. Basic vehicle checks can help prevent breakdowns. Traffic jams are expected on Good Friday and Easter Monday, especially on motorways and roads to coastal resorts.

GEM road safety adviser James Luckhurst said: “No one wants to be sitting in stationary traffic for hours or stuck at the roadside waiting for recovery. We encourage drivers to check they have enough fuel or charge, their tyres are properly inflated with good tread and their oil, screenwash and coolant levels are correct.

Plan your road journey and try to travel outside peak times if at all possible. For example, if you’re away for the weekend, then consider delaying your departure until later on Thursday. For any day trips, get going early.”

Get ready for long queues starting from lunchtime on Easter Monday, as families return from weekend getaways..

Please remember the following information:

  • Check your vehicle in advance. Make sure you have enough fuel or charge. If there are any warning lights on your car dashboard, be sure to get the car checked.
  • Plan your journeys to avoid peak congestion and include breaks along the way to minimize fatigue and stress.
  • Sharing the driving can help reduce fatigue.
  • Ensure everyone, including pets, stays hydrated. Dehydrated drivers are more prone to making errors and experiencing fatigue and headaches.
  • Prepare non-messy snacks for the journey, such as granola bars, dried fruit, and vegetable sticks. Avoid messy snacks like Easter eggs in the car.
