A recent study by eBay, the UK’s leading online marketplace for vehicle parts and accessories, has revealed that 42% of UK drivers are unaware their vehicles are equipped with cabin air filters—a fundamental component that can help alleviate hay fever symptoms. The findings highlight a widespread lack of knowledge about basic vehicle maintenance, despite the impact on driver health and comfort.
Cabin air filters serve a crucial function by blocking dust, pollen, and harmful pollutants from entering the vehicle’s interior. This is particularly important for the estimated 49% of UK drivers who suffer from hay fever annually, according to allergy research groups.
Industry guidelines recommend that motorists inspect and replace their cabin air filter at least once a year, or more often in areas with high pollution or pollen counts. Nevertheless, the eBay research found that approximately 35% of drivers have never checked or replaced this vital component.
Typically situated behind the glovebox or beneath the dashboard on the passenger side, cabin air filters can be accessed and replaced with minimal tools—usually just a screwdriver, and sometimes a socket set, depending on the vehicle make. The process can take as little as ten minutes. Despite this straightforward procedure, the study found that over half (54%) of drivers lack the confidence to perform the replacement themselves.
To streamline maintenance, eBay offers the My Garage feature, enabling drivers to identify compatible cabin air filters and other essential parts by entering their vehicle registration. This tool aims to make routine upkeep more accessible, with replacement filters available from just £10.
The survey also revealed that blocked cabin air filters are linked to a range of issues beyond allergy symptoms, including fogged windows that are slow to clear (57%), unpleasant odours (32%), and diminished air-conditioning performance (21%), which can further affect fuel efficiency.
Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay, commented on the findings: “Cabin air filters are a good example of how small, often overlooked parts can have a noticeable impact on everyday driving. While many motorists understand what these filters do, few feel confident taking action or realising the consequences of leaving them unchanged. As we head into spring, we encourage drivers to check and replace their cabin air filter to improve comfort in the vehicle.” Experts echo this advice, noting that regular filter replacement can significantly improve in-cabin air quality and overall driving experience.
The research also points to generational differences in vehicle maintenance habits. Nearly a quarter (24%) of Millennials reported checking or replacing their cabin air filter within the past six months, compared to just 9% of Baby Boomers. Additionally, 44% of Baby Boomers admitted to never having changed the filter, highlighting a gap in routine vehicle care across age groups.
