BMW Group and Mistral AI have announced a partnership aimed at revolutionising the application of artificial intelligence in crash simulation. The initiative seeks to enhance the quality, accuracy, and efficiency of complex engineering processes. This collaboration represents an initial move toward expanding the use of domain-specific AI across additional facets of vehicle development and throughout the BMW Group’s value chain.
BMW Group CIO and Senior Vice President, Dr. Franz Decker, emphasized the strategic value of industrial data in leveraging artificial intelligence for business growth. “By combining our engineering datasets with Mistral AI’s model training capabilities, we are building specialized AI which supports complex development tasks,” Decker stated.
Crash Simulation: Managing Complexity and Data
BMW Group’s crash simulation operations underscore the necessity for specialized AI solutions. The company conducts thousands of virtual crash simulations each week, producing enormous volumes of engineering data. This ongoing process has amassed a historical dataset exceeding one petabyte, offering detailed insights into vehicle structures and material behavior. Such a comprehensive data repository serves as a unique foundation for training advanced industrial AI models.
Marjorie Janiewicz, Chief Revenue Officer at Mistral AI, highlighted the broader significance of the partnership, calling industrial AI “the new frontier for AI.” Janiewicz added that the collaboration demonstrates how industry-specific AI models can address complex engineering challenges, particularly in crash simulation.
Scaling with Large Industry Models
To scale its AI-driven approach, BMW Group is prioritizing the development of Large Industry Models (LIM). These AI systems are trained on highly specialized engineering and simulation data drawn from vehicle development and safety testing. Unlike their general-purpose counterparts, LIMs incorporate domain-specific knowledge directly into the AI framework. Success in this field depends not only on access to industrial data but also on deep expertise and technical environments that facilitate machine learning from real-world development processes.
This partnership underscores the growing importance of industrial data in driving the next wave of innovation, further bolstering BMW Group’s AI and technology ecosystem.
