Ohme is urging fleets to switch to electric vehicles to save costs. New electric van sales have grown by 14.7% compared to 2020, and with the Commercial Vehicle Show next week, more choices are available in the market. Fleet managers who consider this switch should also explore the wider benefits of providing their drivers with home chargers.
“Many van fleets have been slower to make the switch across to EVs compared to car fleets. A switch to electric will equal substantial savings for any fleet manager and fitting chargers to the homes of their drivers will increase those still further,” said Ohme Director Peter McDonald.
“Charging at home will always be the cheapest option all round. First, the price per kWh of the current domestic standard variable tariff is less than half a typical rapid charging public charger. Second, if the driver knows they can charge at home, they won’t have to hunt for a public charging station, so it adds valuable time to their day. The savings in employee time alone could potentially be even greater than the charging savings.”
UK drivers travel an average of 6,800 miles per year. Intelligent Octopus Go’s smart charging service costs only £170 for a year’s worth of driving at 7.5p/kWh during off-peak hours. The new Standard Variable Tariff charges 24.5p/kWh and would cost £555 for the same mileage. An equivalent van would cost over £1,100 to drive the same distance.
Ohme’s smart chargers adjust charging cost based on real-time grid data while offering drivers the option to charge when renewable energy generation is highest, reducing CO2 emissions.
