Volvo Cars is progressing towards becoming a fully electric car brand. This spring, they are renaming the C40 Recharge crossover and XC40 Recharge SUV to the EC40 and EX40, aligning their names with their EV stablemates. New powertrain options are also available for Volvo’s 2025-model-year cars.

The EC40 and EX40 models now offer a new Single Motor Extended Range powertrain in addition to the rear-wheel-drive Single Motor and all-wheel-drive Twin Motor options.

The new powertrain provides a greater driving range, with the EC40 reaching up to 346 miles and the EX40 up to 343 miles. It features a 78k Wh battery (with 75k Wh usable capacity), a 252 hp electric motor, and a maximum charging speed of 140kW. An optional Performance software upgrade is available, increasing the maximum output for the EC40 and EX40 Twin Motor versions from 408hp to 442hp, along with quicker acceleration response.

The upgrade will also be available to existing owners of previous-model-year C40 and XC40 Recharge cars. Timing and pricing details for the UK will be announced later.

Volvo is also simplifying its price structure, with like-for-like on-the-road prices for the EC40 and EX40 Plus and Ultra models (the EX40 is also available in entry-level Core grade).

The EC40 now has a standard contrast black roof and a new Sand Dune exterior color option. The Recharge name has been removed from plug-in hybrid models, and the Ultimate trim level is now called Ultra for all models. The Ultra specification for the XC60 and XC90 now includes a heated windscreen as a no-cost option, replacing the standard-fit head-up display if selected.

Volvo’s electrified vehicle production for the UK market has moved to Sweden, with XC60 plug-in hybrids now manufactured there. A new entry-level Core version has also been added to the XC60 plug-in hybrid line-up, reducing the starting price by over £4,000. Technical adjustments to the B5 mild-hybrid petrol engine in the XC60 and XC90 SUVs have improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions by up to 4% in the XC60 and 2% in the XC90.

The updated Volvo models are now available for purchase, with initial deliveries expected in the summer. For more information and to use the online configurator, visit: www.volvocars.co.uk
