Among the numerous celebrity cars to be featured at Lake Tegernsee in July, the newest addition possesses genuine superstar appeal.

The ‘Rubirosa’ Gullwing, restored by German engineering firm and renowned 300 SL experts HK-Engineering, is a car with a story to tell.

The 87th 300 SL ever built was bought by Porfirio Rubirosa in 1955 and then transferred to his home in Paris. Rubirosa, believed to have been an inspiration for James Bond, owned the car until his death in 1965. After changing hands multiple times, Hans Kleissl, founder of HK-Engineering, acquired the car in 2000. HK-Engineering will showcase the car, known for its original interior and matte silver color, at the Concours of Elegance Germany.

Rubirosa’s life is extraordinary. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1909, he excelled in polo and was hired by President Trujillo to the Presidential Guard. He served in various embassies and amassed a fortune through multiple marriages and relationships with movie stars and heiresses. He also acted as a confidant for President Trujillo, avoiding criminal charges and prison multiple times in the 1940s and 50s.

In Paris in 1965, after celebrating a victory at the Polo Coupe de France, he went for an early morning drive in his Ferrari 250 GT cabriolet and tragically hit a tree, dying on impact.

The Concours of Elegance Germany is grateful to HK-Engineering for bringing this exceptional 300 SL to the Lake Tegernsee event in July. Fresh from another successful completion of the Mille Miglia, this marks 70 years of this most iconic of German sports cars.
